Developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Cooperation, bonded neodymium segment magnets with the biggest dimension, recently, are successfully manufactured by Aerospace Electro-magnet Cooperation in Hunan. Performance indexes of the sample all meet standard. It will soon be sent to the USA. Net weight of the bonded neodymium magnet reaches 400g, which is a Big Mac, comparing with traditional mini bonded neodymium magnets weighing only a few grams.
As a milestone in the development of rare earth permanent magnetic materials, neodymium magnet materials are called “King Magnet”, due to the excellent magnetic performance. With extremely high energy product, coercive force and energy dense, applications of neodymium permanent magnet materials are taken to an extreme, which are widely used in modern industry and electric technology and usually employed in instruments, motors and separators.
Permanent magnets play an important role in strategic emerging industry, of which the sophistication is a significant standard of evaluating a country’s technological level. As a priority in permanent magnets, neodymium magnets have an undoubtedly essential position in area of rare earth application. Zhang Anwen, secretary general of Chinese Society of Rare Earth indicates that in the future application area of rare earth, permanent magnets, oil catalytic cracking and emission purification will have the fastest growth. It is expected that in 2018, the compound growth rates will respectively reach 10.1%, 8% and 6%.
Some organizations point out that frequency air-conditioners, wind power and energy-saving elevators are the main growing power in extension of permanent magnets’ application, especially in automobile market. According to statistics, each hybrid power car consumes 2.5 kilograms of neodymium magnets and each electrical car needs 5 kilograms.
Meanwhile, according to expectation of Global Wind Energy Council, installation capacity of wind energy will be doubled during 2013 to 2017. In addition, lifting machines, oil pump motors, magnetic separators, electric tools and rail transportation will have stably increasing demand of rare earth permanent magnetic materials. It is estimated that demand of rare earth permanent magnet will reach 150 thousand tons after 5 years.
With continuous improvement of permanent magnet technology, neodymium magnet application will be broadened as well as investing value of rare earth metals will be manifested.
